Newport Bridge

This is a painting I did with the Vistas and Vinyards group. It is on Arches hot press paper. I did th sketch and about half of the painting on site. Then finished it in my studio the next day. I am pleased with the contrast and the focus on the city of Newport partially hidden by the bridge. The bridge was done with a combination of an Ink wash and Indigo paint.

This is a painting I did of James Kirk from a photo that I took of him in his studio. It is on Arches hot press paper, and painted with a limited pallett. The painting is perminantly mounted on a wood frame and waxed. I used a lot of water to get water marks and splashes to loosten it up. This is my effort to paint in Kirk's style. I am very pleased with the results.

Clear Lake

This is a limited pallett painting that I did at Clear Lake, which is the headwaters of the mackenzie River. I did a quick sketch on site and then since it was not a day to do watercolors on site, I finished the painting in my room at the lodge at Suttle Lake. I was pleased with the softness and atmospheric perspective.

LaQuinta Coffee Shop

This is a coffee shop that My wife and I go to while vacationing in LaQuinta Ca. I did a sketch on site, then finished the painting in my studio. It is a little washed-out. I will probably add some additional contrast to get the feeling of a hot morning sun.

Model at Kirks Studio

This is a painting of a lady that was attending James Kirks open studio. She agreed to pose for a picture. I did not use any miskit. Just painted shapes. I was pleased with the hair and background.

Oregon Vineyard

Avery's Train

This is a train that is in Avery Park in Corvallis. I painted it on site with just a loose sketch and tried to paint shapes an no so much focus on the details. I was pleased with the results.

Detering Orchards

This is a painting that I did on site with the Vistas and Vinyards group. I did the sketch on site and about 1/2 of the painting. The remainder I did from several photo's in my studio. I was pleased with the appearance of detail without being too detailed. I could have worked on the design more.

Basket Slough

This is a painting done on site at the Basket Slough near Salem. I was pleased with the feeling of oak trees on the hillsides. I was also pleased with the thistles in the foreground. I could have gotten more contrast in the painting.

The third of 9. This is a monochromatic painting that I was attempting to get a little looser with my approach, and allowing or creating waterspots. This approach is a result of influence from James Kirk. I am pleased with how it turned-out. Perminantly mounted on frame and waxed.

This is the second of 9 grandchildren that I plan to paint. Done with the same method as the others, on hot-press paper. This painting was not monochromatic however. I was pleased with the smile.

Emily on a Good Hair Day

This is the first of nine of my grandchildren that I am painting. This is a monochromatic painting on hot-press Arches paper. I built a 16"x20" wooden frame with a plywood surface, and stretched the paper perminantly on the frame. Then did to painting and waxed it with Dorlands Wax medium so that it is mounted without glass.

Self Portrait

This is a self Poitrait I did on Arches hot press paper from a photograph. I built a wooden frame, and perminantly mounted the paper on the frame. Then painted the poitrait, and waxed it with Dorlands Wax Medium. The finished product does not need a frame or glass, and is archival.

This is a painting done from a sketch of Laura on a full size sheet of Arches hot-press. This painting was accepted into the Watercolor Society of Oregon, Spring 2010 show in Brookings. It wone "Best of Show". The Juror for the show was Stephen Quiller.

Mokie, Sandy's Friend

Three Chef's, One Tortilla

This is a watercolor painting I just completed on 150# hot-press paper. I thought the composition with the dark circular wauk, and the dark circular chef hats and would be interesting. I liked the high contrast, but always have trouble getting my darks dark enough.

This was another attempt of mine at using hot press paper. I wanted to get the texture of the fur of the sheep and llama. I was pleased with some of it but not other parts. I will paint it again and try to focus more on the texture of the fine hair of the llama.

This is a 1/4 sheet painting that I did on hot press paper. I have been interested in trying to use hot press, since most of the watercolorists that I admire use it, Ted Nuttall, Arne Westerman, Charles Reid, etc. I am finding that there are some interesting things that happen with granulation on hot press. I don't think that I could have achieved the same effect on the fur with cold press.
